The myth of the selkie is very bittersweet and poignant. Like the story of the changling, it seems to be designed to explain a tragic element of human behavior. The selkie, to me at least, represents the husband or wife that can’t be fully committed, there is a sense of restlessness to them, a far away look in their eyes that never goes away.
What better way to explain a spouse that seemed never 100% engaged, who one day left without saying goodbye?
One of my favorite movies is, “The Secret of Roan Inish” about a young girl discovering her family secret. Such a sweet but sad movie.
